Promoting the sustainable return of our native ‘Virginia Oyster’ (Crassostrea virginica) as the basis for the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its ecosystem by accelerating programs and projects with proven results and “enlisting” our Virginia Watermen as an important part of the solution.
The simple Oyster has one specialized characteristic – it filters water at a suprisingly high rate. One Oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water every day.
